T’was the end of the year and all through the firm,
Not a staff person was stressing, not even an intern.
The staff they were celebrating today without a care,
Knowing that next tax season soon would be there.
The partners had nestled in to plan the year ahead.
While visions of bonuses danced in their heads.
And I on the phone, receivables still to collect.
Was thinking of my own bonus to protect.
When out in the hallway there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my chair to see what was the matter.
Away from my desk I flew like a flash,
Tore open the door and down the hallway in a dash.
The light from the sun shone on the table covered with food.
They’re laughing and talking, everyone’s in a good mood.
Then what to my wondering eyes should appear,
Was one of my partners with a bottle of cheer.
With some food and a little sip, I too became lively and quick,
There were cookies and candy and a peppermint stick.
Faster than tax penalties and interest accrues, the staff they all came,
The Managing Partner shouted and called them by name!
Now Ira! Now Bob! Now Stanley & Harry!
Now Michael! Now John, David & Mary!
To the conference room, come one & come all!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!
Come before the mad deadlines apply.
And we’ll be met with tax returns, an endless supply.
When into the office the clients will pour,
With their boxes stuffed full of receipts and more.
Then in a twinkling it will be heard in the hall,
I’m too busy, can you please take this call?
We’ll scratch our heads and start to feel a bit tense,
And wonder if this is a legitimate expense.
Our bodies will ache from head to toe.
Another late night, and they’ll be many more to go.
A stack of returns will be piled on the desk and the floor.
It will be heard down the hall “Please, don’t bring me anymore!”
Our eyes will lose their twinkle. Our dimples won’t be merry.
We may start to think, “I should have been an actuary.”
Our big mouths will often be drawn in a frown.
These audits just might bring us down.
The stub of a pencil will be held tight in your fist.
Those numbers we’ll be crunching, you get the gist.
We’ll work through lunch and hear a grumble in our belly.
But we’ll stay at our desks and order in from the deli.
The piles of papers will dwindle, the desks will be almost clean.
For the days will pass quickly, soon it will be April fifteen.
Then we’ll look at the calendar with a nod of the head.
And soon we know we’ll have nothing to dread.
So now we speak a few words, we’ve finished our work.
Today we celebrate and enjoy a perk.
Another year has come to an end, as everyone knows.
And after a vote, to rank of partner, some of you rose.
The MP sprang from his desk, to his team he gave a whistle,
And the staff ran out the door, like kids at dismissal.
And I heard him exclaim as he went out of sight,
“Happy year-end to all, and to all a good night!”
